What can you use the app for?

Khan Academy gives internet users a place to learn almost anything through instructional videos. The website includes thousands of videos on many different topics and activities.

Users can browse an immense collection of categories and sub categories that include mathematics, art history, American civics, calculus, biology, banking, chemistry, astronomy, SAT preparation, investing, statistics and many more. Along with informative videos, the site also invites the user to practice what they have learned with an exercise. Users can verify their answers on each exercise or request a hint, which sets back their progress but helps them understand the question or problem better.
Users who are stuck on an exercise can also watch a video that explains how to find a solution or answer. The user can work through a tree of exercises to become proficient in a specific subject.

What is the history and popularity of the app?

Khan Academy was founded in 2006 by Salman Khan. The team behind Kahn Academy is a non-profit group that is focused on helping improve the way people learn for free.

The site supplies its videos and exercises to anyone of any age from anywhere in the world. The site has received positive comments and reviews from users, especially for its “learn at your own pace” format. The user can work at whatever speed they are comfortable with without feeling intimidated by a classroom full of other students.

What are the differences to other apps?

Khan Academy gives users the tools they need to improve their abilities in many academic subjects (especially math and science). The user can begin working through a collection of exercises and view instructional videos. The user gathers the information they need to complete the exercises and make progress. Each exercise appears on a larger tree of exercises. This allows the user to see how far they have come and how much farther they have to go as they master a subject.

How does the web app look and feel to use?

Khan Academy has its strengths and weaknesses when it comes to design. For the most part, the site is very well organized and allows eager learners to focus on their chosen subject. The interface never intrudes on the user’s exercises or video viewing. Some elements, such as the clever tree with a hand shaped trunk that makes the site’s logo, are very appealing. Others, such as the colorful star background found on the exercise trees, seem borderline cheese.

With an application like Khan Academy, looks are not as important as getting the job done and the site manages to do that rather well.

How does the registration process work?

A visitor can browse Khan Academy’s categories and videos without signing up. Users who would like to monitor their progress should create an account. This can be done by clicking the “Login” link tucked in to the upper, right hand corner of the homepage. The following page includes two large buttons that invite the user to sign in with a Google or Facebook account. Links below the buttons are available to direct the user to the registration forms for each. Users must log in with either Google or Facebook. A separate Khan Academy account is not available.

What does it cost to use the application?

All users are given access to all Khan Academy exercises and videos for free. This is to be expected since the site is a non-profit organization. The goal is to help all students further their knowledge and skills without worrying about the cost. Free access will also encourage more users to try Khan Academy to supplement their learning efforts. Users can return as often as they like to view videos or work through exercises.

Who would you recommend the application to?

Khan Academy is ideal for anyone who would like to learn something. The site focuses primarily on academic subjects; however a few unique categories are included. Students who are currently attending classes may find that Khan Academy makes a helpful supplement to their course work. Others may simply want to improve or brush up on their skills in a particular area of learning. Both can find what they need by visiting the site’s collection of video lessons.

  • Users can register and log in with a Google or Facebook account
  • Exercises help users practice what they learn and make progress
